Expect and accept your mind’s jumpiness. When your mind wanders, just gently bring it back to present-moment thoughts, feelings, and sensations.
EXERCISE: | Building Mindful Moments into Daily Life
There are lots of ways to build mindfulness into your family routine.
MINDFUL SENSATIONS. Try mindful eating. Give your child something she likes to eat and ask her to eat it slowly, paying attention to the texture and shape of the food on her tongue. A friend tried this with her three-year-old using white chocolate. A few weeks later at the store, she was trying to decide between buying milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or white chocolate, and asked her son which one he thought she should buy. He pointed to the white chocolate, answering, “I think you should choose the mindfulness chocolate, Mommy, ’cause it makes your mouth and heart happy.” Your kids can also be mindful of the sensations they experience when they brush their teeth, tie their shoelaces, take a bath or shower, and pack their schoolbag.
MINDFUL MEDIA AND PEOPLE WATCHING. As I’ve mentioned, a fun way to help younger kids tune in to emotions is by muting the TV volume and guessing the emotions of the actors. You can play the same game while people watching with your kids when you’re out and about, observing body language and facial expressions. Learning to read subtle emotional cues will also help your child to develop emotional intelligence.
